#DoekWithADifference

Aug 16, 2026

Our #DoekWithADifference journey began in 2014, carrying a powerful message of hope to communities across South Africa.

From 2025, the project enters an exciting new chapter through a formal collaboration with the Cancer Alliance, expanding both its reach and impact. This renewed campaign honours the deep symbolism of the doek—representing dignity, pride, culture, and womanhood—as we raise awareness about the urgent need to eliminate cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is a preventable and treatable disease, yet it still claims the lives of at least 16 women every day in South Africa—one every 67 minutes. Through this project, we aim to bring lifesaving conversations into homes, communities, and cultural spaces nationwide.

We are honoured to have Marlene le Roux—renowned arts and culture leader, women’s rights advocate, and champion for persons with disabilities—as the ambassador for #DoekWithADifference. In her words:

“Traditional head wraps (iDhuku) have long been part of African cultures and are worn for cultural, religious, or fashion reasons. The style differs from culture to culture, but the symbolism is universal. We look forward to seeing all women from all cultures in South Africa embrace this initiative, which celebrates their confidence and strength in support of cervical cancer prevention.”

With this campaign, we strive to honour women with dignity and respect, spark meaningful conversations, and unite communities in the mission to eliminate cervical cancer for future generations.
